Border Counties Hound Club Open Show 2018 Critique

I was delighted to be invited to judge this my favourite breed. I was touched by the support that the Deerhound fraternity gave me. From the 22 dogs entered 16 were present. It is fair to say I did not have a bad exhibit, a day I will never forget.

This was a challenge for me as I considered both outstanding bitches.

1 Constantine Cotherstone Serenade at Kaleginy she appealed for her wonderful all over balance and her more positive movement. Particularly in front, she has a lovely long head with a slight rise over her beautiful eyes that gave the desired expression. Her eyes were dark and she has neat ears. Strong neck and wonderful lay of shoulder. Correct body proportions with well arched loin and strong powerful movement, even at this tender age both ways. A good coat texture. She shows great promise but like the second puppy in this class they need time to develop into the beautiful bitches I am sure they will become. BPB & RBPS
2 Bailey Greyflax Pearls a Singer perhaps a little unsettled on the move but she is still a baby and it is probably what you would expect in a breed where development can be slow. So well let down behind with a vey good turn of stifle and she has good width behind. Again, a lovely head, neat ears charming expression, in good coat of a harsh texture. A puppy with lovely legs and feet. This was certainly a case for splitting hairs in this class.

Another good class.

1 Finnett & Heathcote Hyndsight Careless Whisper 1st and very fit for function. Just look at that fabulous rear, ultra sound both ends. Great neck and shoulder placement, good broad forearm and very strong feet. Deep chest, well arched loin, very strong hips well set apart. (as did all from this amazing kennel). Her long tapering tail almost touched the ground, correct coat texture. A young bitch maturing well and I predict a very bright future.
2 Constantine Kaleginy Antheia beautiful feminine bitch with a delightful head, she had that faraway look in her eye. Totally balanced throughout, excellent body proportions and a lovely example of the breed.
3 Hawkins Thistle at Kwaricott

1 Peach Kilbourne Shrike a big handsome young dog with great ring presences. He possesses a wonderful head set on an arched neck, excellent shoulders. The construction of a greyhound in body, he has wonderful legs and feet. He was not overcoated and his coat was crisp to the touch. A perfect sized male that I have admired since he came out as a raw baby. He still has more to give and time will give him the maturity that will make him a great Deerhound. Not that he is not now. BOB.
2 Finnett & Heathcote Hyndsight On the Run and another that ticks all the boxes, perhaps he has better width and broader hips that the winner. A graceful outline on the move. A proud head carriage, lovely keen eye and expression. A very good crisp harsh textured coat. Both him and the dog above should make their titles.
3 Smith Hyndsight Timespace at Julam

Again another strong class 1st and 2nd had little to separate them, the winner just scored in her neck.

1 Finnett & Heathcote Hindsight in Your Dreams a beautiful head with a charming expression, a broad skull with neat ears, long lean head of ideal proportions. Clean neck and shoulder. Marvellously board forearm, excellent body proportions and good wide hips. She had a well bent stifles, powerful active mover, a truly lovely bitch who I understand has recently been made up and I can see why.
2 Morton & Morgan Chuilinn Ballad same remarks apply to 2nd so sound and elegant on the move. Another worthy of her title, her harsh textured coat that was not over coated, a bitch with lovely bone well arched loin.
3 Morton Morgan & Constantine Cotherstone Islay Mist at Kaleginy
